Helmet Laws
  • Bicycles: Helmets are required for riders under 16 years old.

  • E-Bikes: Riders of Class 3 e-bikes (those that can reach 28 mph) must wear a helmet, regardless of age.


E-Bike Classification

Alabama follows the 3-class e-bike system, which classifies e-bikes as:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.

  • Class 2: Throttle-assist (no pedaling required), up to 20 mph.

  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.

✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles and do not require registration, licensing, or insurance.


Where You Can Ride
  • Sidewalks: Generally not permitted for bikes or e-bikes unless local ordinances allow.

  • Bike Lanes: E-bikes are allowed if the local law does not restrict them.

  • Shared Paths/Multi-Use Trails: Allowed unless specifically restricted by local authority.

  • Roadways: Legal if the rider follows standard bicycle rules.


Age Restrictions
  • Riders must be at least 14 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.


Lights & Equipment
  • At night, bicycles and e-bikes must have a front white light and rear red reflector or light.

  • Working brakes are required.
