Helmet Laws
Bicycles: No statewide helmet law. Local municipalities may have their own helmet requirements.
E-Bikes: No statewide helmet requirement, but helmets are recommended for safety.
E-Bike Classification
Alaska follows a modified 3-class e-bike system, consistent with many other states:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.
Class 2: Throttle-assist, up to 20 mph.
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.
✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles and do not require registration, licensing, or insurance.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks: Permitted, but local laws may vary.
Bike Lanes: Allowed unless otherwise restricted by local ordinance.
Shared Paths/Multi-Use Trails: Allowed for Class 1 and 2; Class 3 may be restricted.
Roadways: Allowed when following standard bicycle traffic rules.
Age Restrictions
No statewide age restriction, but riders of Class 3 e-bikes are typically recommended to be 16+.
Municipalities may impose their own rules.
Lights & Equipment
Night riding requires a white front light and red rear reflector/light.
All bikes and e-bikes must have functional brakes.
