Helmet Laws
Bicycles: Riders under 16 are required to wear helmets.
E-Bikes:
• All Class 3 e-bike riders must wear a helmet, regardless of age.
• Helmets are encouraged for all classes and age groups.
E-Bike Classification
Connecticut follows the standard 3-class e-bike system:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, max 20 mph.
Class 2: Throttle-assist, max 20 mph.
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, max 28 mph.
✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles, so no license, registration, or insurance is required.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks: Generally prohibited for both bikes and e-bikes.
Bike Lanes:
• Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed.
• Class 3 e-bikes may be restricted, depending on local regulations.Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
• Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are permitted unless local rules say otherwise.
• Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed unless explicitly permitted.Roadways: E-bikes may operate in the roadway following the same rules as bicycles.
Age Restrictions
Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old.
Lights & Equipment
When riding at night, you must have:
• A white front light visible from 500 feet
• A red rear reflector or light visible from 600 feetAll e-bikes must have working brakes and proper reflectors.
