Helmet Laws
  • Bicycles: Idaho has no statewide helmet requirement, but helmets are strongly encouraged for all riders.

  • E-Bikes:
    No specific helmet law, but helmets are recommended, especially for Class 3 e-bikes and younger riders.


E-Bike Classification

Idaho uses the 3-class e-bike system:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.

  • Class 2: Throttle-assist, up to 20 mph.

  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.

✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles.
✔ No license, registration, or insurance is required.


Where You Can Ride
  • Sidewalks: Local governments determine access — e-bikes are often restricted on sidewalks.

  • Bike Lanes:
    All classes of e-bikes are allowed unless local ordinances restrict them.

  • Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
    • Class 1 & 2 generally allowed.
    • Class 3 often not permitted unless local authority allows.

  • Roadways: All e-bike classes may operate following the same rules as bicycles.


Age Restrictions
  • Riders must be at least 15 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.

  • No age limit for Class 1 or 2.


Lights & Equipment
  • When riding at night, you must have:
    • A white front light visible from 500 feet
    • A red rear reflector or light visible from 500 feet

  • E-bikes must have working brakes and reflectors on pedals and wheels.
