Helmet Laws
Bicycles: No statewide helmet requirement, but helmets are strongly encouraged, especially for minors.
E-Bikes: Helmets are required for riders under 18 operating a Class 3 e-bike.
E-Bike Classification
Illinois uses the standard 3-class system:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.
Class 2: Throttle-assist, up to 20 mph.
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.
✔ E-bikes are not classified as motor vehicles and do not require registration, licensing, or insurance.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks: May be restricted by local ordinance.
Bike Lanes: E-bikes are allowed unless otherwise restricted by local law.
Shared-Use Paths: Class 1 and 2 allowed; Class 3 may be restricted.
Roadways: Permitted when following standard bicycle rules.
Age Restrictions
Minimum age of 16 to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
Lights & Equipment
When riding at night, a front white light and rear red reflector/light are required.
Working brakes are mandatory.
