Helmet Laws
  • Bicycles: No statewide helmet law, but some cities may require helmets for minors.

  • E-Bikes:
    No statewide helmet requirement, including for Class 3.
    Helmet use is strongly recommended, especially for teens and higher-speed riders.


E-Bike Classification

Kansas uses the 3-class e-bike system:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph.

  • Class 2: Throttle-assist, up to 20 mph.

  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.

✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles under Kansas law.
No license, registration, or insurance is required.


Where You Can Ride
  • Sidewalks:
    • Regulated locally — in many areas, e-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks.

  • Bike Lanes:
    Permitted for all e-bike classes unless posted otherwise.

  • Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
    Class 1 & 2 are usually allowed.
    Class 3 may be restricted unless specifically permitted.

  • Roadways: Riders may operate as bicycles and follow the same road rules.


Age Restrictions
  • Must be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.

  • No minimum age for Class 1 and 2.


Lights & Equipment
  • After dark, e-bikes must have:
    • A white front light visible from at least 500 feet
    • A red rear reflector or light visible from 600 feet

  • Brakes must be functional and capable of stopping on dry pavement.
