Helmet Laws
Bicycles:
• Helmets are required for riders under 12 years old.E-Bikes:
• All riders of Class 3 e-bikes must wear a helmet, regardless of age.
• No statewide helmet law for Class 1 & 2, but use is recommended.
E-Bike Classification
Louisiana follows the 3-class e-bike system:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle-assist, up to 20 mph
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph
✔ E-bikes are not motor vehicles, and do not require registration, licensing, or insurance.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks:
• Sidewalk riding is typically prohibited, especially for adults and faster e-bikes.Bike Lanes:
• E-bikes are generally allowed, unless restricted by local ordinance.Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
• Class 1 & 2 are usually permitted.
• Class 3 may be restricted unless allowed by local authority.Roadways: E-bikes may be operated as bicycles and must follow standard traffic laws.
Age Restrictions
Riders must be at least 12 years old to operate any class of e-bike.
Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
Lights & Equipment
For night riding:
• A white front light visible from 500 feet
• A red rear reflector or light visible from 500 feetE-bikes must have working brakes and side/pedal reflectors.
