Helmet Laws
  • Bicycles:
No statewide helmet law in Mississippi.
    • Some cities or counties may have local ordinances requiring helmets for minors.

  • E-Bikes:
No statewide helmet requirement, even for Class 3.
    • Helmet use is strongly encouraged, especially for youth and high-speed riders.

E-Bike Classification

Mississippi does not currently define e-bikes under a 3-class system in state law. However:

  • E-bikes are generally treated as bicycles, not motor vehicles, if they meet federal limits (750w motor, max 20–28 mph).

  • Riders and advocates should refer to local ordinances, as interpretations may vary by city or county.

Where You Can Ride
  • Sidewalks:
Regulated locally. Some cities may prohibit bikes and e-bikes on sidewalks.

  • Bike Lanes:
    • E-bikes are generally permitted, unless restricted by local law.

  • Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
    • Allowed unless explicitly prohibited. Trail access can vary by class and locality.

  • Roadways:
    • E-bikes can ride on roads just like traditional bicycles, obeying all traffic laws.

Age Restrictions
  • No formal age limit is set at the state level for operating an e-bike.

  • Riders of faster e-bikes (Class 3, where locally defined) should be 16+ for safety reasons.

Lights & Equipment
  • For night riding:
    • A white front light visible from at least 500 feet
    • A red rear reflector or light visible from 500 feet

  • All bikes/e-bikes must have working brakes and reflectors.
