Helmet Laws
Bicycles:
• No statewide helmet law in Nebraska.
• Some cities (e.g., Lincoln, Omaha) may encourage or require helmets for minors.E-Bikes:
• No helmet requirement under state law for any class of e-bike.
• Helmet use is strongly encouraged, especially for Class 3 and youth riders.
E-Bike Classification
Nebraska officially adopted the 3-class e-bike system in 2022:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, max 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle-assist, max 20 mph
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, max 28 mph
✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles in Nebraska.
✔ No license, insurance, or registration required.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks:
• Regulated locally — many cities restrict or ban bikes/e-bikes on sidewalks in business districts.Bike Lanes:
• All classes are allowed unless prohibited by local ordinance.Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
• Class 1 & 2 are generally allowed.
• Class 3 may be restricted depending on local trail policies.Roadways:
• E-bikes are treated like bicycles and can use roads and shoulders as long as they follow standard traffic laws.
Age Restrictions
Must be at least 16 years old to ride a Class 3 e-bike.
No age restrictions for Class 1 or 2 under state law.
Lights & Equipment
For nighttime riding, the following are required:
• A white front light visible from 500 feet
• A red rear light or reflector visible from 500 feetWorking brakes and side reflectors are required.
