Helmet Laws
Bicycles:
• Helmets are required for all riders under 17 years old.E-Bikes:
• Riders under 17 must wear helmets for Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes.
• Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted under current state law (see below).
E-Bike Classification
New Jersey defines low-speed electric bicycles in 2 categories (not the standard 3-class system):
Type 1: Pedal-assist only, max 20 mph
Type 2: Throttle-assist, max 20 mph
✅ Both are treated as bicycles under NJ law.
⚠️ Class 3 e-bikes (28 mph pedal-assist) are not permitted under current state law.
✔ No license, insurance, or registration required for legal e-bikes.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks:
• Generally not permitted unless local law allows.Bike Lanes:
• E-bikes may use bike lanes where bicycles are permitted.Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
• Allowed unless otherwise posted by local or state authorities.Roadways:
• Legal to ride on roads, but riders must follow all bicycle-related traffic laws.
Age Restrictions
Riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike legally.
Helmets required for riders under 17 years old.
Lights & Equipment
At night, all bicycles and e-bikes must have:
• A white front light visible from 500 feet
• A red rear light or reflector visible from 500 feetMust also have a bell or audible signal and working brakes.
