Helmet Laws
Bicycles:
• No statewide helmet law for bicycle riders.
• Some local municipalities may require helmets for minors.E-Bikes:
• No helmet requirement under state law for any e-bike class.
• Riders of Class 3 e-bikes are strongly encouraged to wear helmets for safety.
E-Bike Classification
Oklahoma adopted the 3-class e-bike system in 2021:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle-assist (with or without pedaling), up to 20 mph
Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph
✔ E-bikes are not considered motor vehicles under Oklahoma law.
✔ No license, registration, or insurance is required for legal operation.
Where You Can Ride
Sidewalks:
• Regulated locally — many cities prohibit e-bikes on sidewalks in business districts.Bike Lanes:
• Allowed for all classes unless restricted by local ordinance.Shared-Use Paths / Trails:
• Class 1 & 2 generally permitted.
• Class 3 may be restricted — check local signage or rules.Roadways:
• Permitted on public roads (excluding highways), following all standard bicycle laws.
Age Restrictions
Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old.
No age restriction for Class 1 or 2 models.
Lights & Equipment
Nighttime riding requires:
• A white front light visible from 500 feet
• A red rear reflector or light visible from 300 feetWorking brakes and reflectors are required for all bikes and e-bikes.
