RIGHT Attitude

Riding RAGBRAI can be an incredible experience, but it’s important to have the right attitude to ensure your ride is safe and enjoyable. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a first-timer, it’s essential to remember that you’re sharing the road with thousands of others. Here are some tips for developing the RIGHT Attitude on RAGBRAI.

First and foremost, be considerate of other riders. You may be a fast cyclist, but chances are, someone will pass you during the week. When someone calls out “on your left,” be prepared to move to the right or ride single file. Being caught in a bad spot on the road or facing oncoming traffic can be dangerous for everyone involved. Move over to the right of the road and be considerate when you’re being passed.

In addition to being considerate, it’s important to be a predictable rider. You can’t always predict what others around you will do, but you can control your own actions. If you’re passing someone, call out “on your left” and move to the left. If you’re slowing down, call out “slowing” so others around you know what to expect. Being a predictable rider will help keep you and those around you safe.

When you hear a Care Ambulance coming through, pull to the right and stop. Emergency responders need to get through quickly and safely, and pulling over is the best way to ensure that happens. Also, be sure to cooperate with RAGBRAI and law enforcement officials. The officers with the Iowa State Patrol work hard to make sure everyone is safe, so do what they ask you to do and thank them for their hard work.

Finally, stay on the marked route. The route is chosen for your safety and convenience, and it has ambulance access, controlled intersections, SAG, bike repair, and food/water stops along the way. Taking shortcuts may seem like a good idea at the time, but it’s important to stick to the marked route for everyone’s safety.

Remember, you have an unlimited supply of fun, but only one meltdown. Save it for the end of the week when you’re exhausted, or choose not to use it at all. Having the RIGHT Attitude on RAGBRAI means being considerate of others, being a predictable rider, cooperating with officials, and staying on the marked route. By following these tips, you’ll have a safe and enjoyable ride.
